New Florence Lions Officers Installed for 2020-2021
On Wednesday, June 24th, the Florence Lions installed new club officers for the
2020-2021 fiscal year. The official swearing-in was performed by new Lion District Governor
Mac Ferguson, from the Lexington Lions Club, who was in attendance with
his wife, Lion Cynthia Ferguson.

After the swearing-in, the new Florence President Lion Doug Braun received the gavel from outgoing
Past President Lion Mike Serra who, in turn, presented his Lion of the Year Award to Lion
Secretary Chuck Carlson.

In his farewell address to the club, Past President Lion MIke
outlined the past year's accomplishments and projects. During recent months the club faced the many
restrictions brought on by the pandemic which were countered
through on-line meetings and project amendments. Our thanks to Lion Mike Serra for his
great leadership.

Florence Lions are pleased to announce its joining the list of corporate co-spondors
of GoPantry. a local non-profit organization which uses donated funds and volunteer time to
provide eligible school-age children with food outside of the school environment, ie. weekends
and spring/summer vacation. GoPantry volunteers prepare Go Boxes and Go Bags for
these kids whose families are having financial difficulties.
At this expecially hard time due to the current pandemic, Florence Lions elected to provide
$5000 as its initial participation.

Please donate your old glasses to help others! Lions Clubs recycle these glasses trough qualified agencies
throughout the world to help adults and children who have no resources. These glasses are distributed totally free of charge to the individuals who need them.
Drop Off boxes are located as follows:

On June 2016 the newly elelcted club officers for the Florence Lions Club were sworn in at an installation dinner at the Florence Lions Clubhouse.
Kentucky Lions District Governor Jeff Lorenzen (Erlanger Lions member) swore the new officers in after thanking outgoing officers for their work.
Our thanks to outgoing president Lion Tony Colley for an excellent year and our congratulations to new president Mike Serra along with our best wishes for success in the coming year.
Immediate Past Lion President Colley thanked the membership for their many efforts during his tenure and made a presentation of Lion of the Year to Florence Lion member and past District Governor Lion Dave "Mac" McClure.
Lion "Mac" will also serve this year as thhe Club's Eyesight Chairman.

On December 11th, 2018, Florence Lion Eddie Walter volunteered to make a lengthy drive to Upland, Indiana to deliver over 6,000 pairs of used eyeglasses and 600 pairs of non-prescription sunglasses to the International Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center operated by the members of the Upland Lions Club.
These glasses were donated by the Northern Kentucky community to the various Northern Kentucky Lions Clubs throughout the year. These items will be distributed by Lions International to individuals in third-world countries in areas having little or no medical facilities. With your donated eyewear, these individuals will enjoy an improved quality in vision which they might otherwise never know.

The Florence Lions wish to thanks all of the participants, sponsors and club workers who helped
make this year's Golf Outing a great success! The weather held out for a super day with 72 golfers at the Kenton County Golf Course, followed as usual with a delicious dinner at the Lions Clubhouse.
Thanks to event Chairmen Lion Craig Wintermann, Lion Tony Colley and Lion Pete Toerner who did a great job and also to Lions Eddie Walter and Phyllis Carlson for providing the prime rib dinner!!
On June 27th 1the new club officers were installed at the Lions Clubhouse together with an award ceremony for outstanding member participation throughout the past fiscal year.
The awards were presented by outgoing president Lion Paul Robinson. Officers for the 2018-2019 fiscal year were presented and sworn in by Vice District Governor Lion Jeff Lorenzen.

On September 21st, Florence Lion Ed Walter drove nearly three hours to the International Eyeglass Recycling Center in Upland, Indiana to deliver
6,200 pairs of donated glasses collected by the Florence and Erlanger Lions Clubs. The delivery also contained 300 pairs of sunglasses and seven boxes
of hinged eyeglass cases. This was all made possible by the caring donations of used eyewear by Northern Kentucky community members. |
The Florence Lions Club is pleased to present Lion Phyllis Carlson with a Lifetime Membership award to honor her for outstanding service over three decades.
Florence Lions President Paul Robinson presented the award during the club’s regular October meeting. Phyllis has been a member of the Florence Lions Club for 37 years and prior to that she was a member and an officer for many years in the Florence Lioness Club, also part of the International Association of Lions Clubs. |
Lion Donna McClure is shown above receiving the Florence Lion of the Year award by Lion President Nick Payne at the June 28th installation of new officers for fiscal year 2017-2018. Lion Donna has served as Eyesight Screening Chairperson, co-ordinating the Lions school eye screening, as well as co-chairing the annual Lions Yard Sale for several years. Lion Steve Ives Receives the Lions Prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship
Florence Lion and Club Secretary Steve Ives was named a Melvin Jones Fellow at the Lions Mid-Year Leadership Conference in Louisville on January 13th . The award was made in recognition of Steve's world service and commitment and is the highest honor bestowed by the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF). The plaque was presented by upcoming Lions International President Gudrun Bjort Ingvadotter of Iceland. Our congratulations to Lion Steve!

Lion Ferd Metzger Honored for six decades of Lions Club Service
Lion Ferd has been a member of the Florence Lions Club for 59 years. He has served on every Club Committee and office including the Secretary and President twice.
He has brought 25 great members to the world of Lionism. He started the Vision Screening in the Boone County Schools in 1958. An ongoing program that over the years has screened more than 100,000 students and has identified thousands with vision deficiencies.
Lion Ferd also was the force behind the Boone County Senior Eyesight Program that funds the Boone County Lions Clubs eyesight programs as well as convincing the Kentucky Legislators to pass a law to make mandatory eye examination of any student who enters an State funded school for the first time.
For his distinguished services, over the years, he has received numerous awards and recognitions including Life Membership, Life Patron, Finis Davis Fellow and Melvin Jones Fellow awards.

Lion Keller Honored on 50th Anniversay in the Florence Lions
Lion Frank Keller was honored by the Club at the regular meeting on Augst 13th for having served in the organization for 50 years. Lion Phyllis Carlson took the podium to outline Frank's distinguishhed and impressive five decades in the Florence Lions Club, listing Frank's service in many of the club's offices, primarily as Treasurer which he held for over a dozen years.
Lion Frank joined the Florence Lions under the sponsorship of Lion Ferd Metzger in 1964 and immediately began to participate in the club's activities, taking on many chairmanships in the process.
Shown in the picture with current Florence Lions President Doug Braun, Frank received a plaque in honor of his anniversary and a standiing ovation from the club members as well as his wife, children and grandchildren who were present for the occasion.
Our heartfelt thanks and congratulations to Lion Frank.

New Florence Lions Website Launched Florence Lions is pleased to present a new and improved web presence, designed to present the club not only to the public, but also to provide improved member communications through its club member section. This will improve cohesiveness between hall rental and special event chairpersons and eliminate the use of many thousands of email communications over the years. It will also serve to allow the general membership to be more informed on various manpower needs.
